Workshop on becoming a performer
On the 15th of March, we thoroughly enjoyed running a workshop for the year-nine singers at Cranleigh School entitled ‘Becoming a Performer’. Pupils shared with us some wonderful performances of unaccompanied folk songs and we helped them develop the tools to really engage with the texts of their songs. They learnt how rewarding it is to use our imaginations to become characters and to tell detailed stories.
The pupils left with an appreciation of how important it is to ‘understand not just the text, but also its backstory, before we even sing a note!’ They were also interested to explore ‘daring to extend the silence as much as you can so it makes the listener want to know what is happening afterwards’.
